Four and out: Surprises from the NFL in Week 3
By Dani Bostick
Kansas City’s ignominious streak ends
The last time a Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver caught a touchdown pass was 18 games ago. That was Week 14 of the 2013 season, when Chase Daniel connected with Dexter McCluster on December 29, 2013. Incumbent quarterback Alex Smith’s last touchdown pass to a wide receiver was on December 8, 2013.
During Week 3’s game against Green Bay at Lambeau Field that dry spell ended when wide receiver Jeremy Maclin caught a five-yard pass from Smith for a touchdown. So far this season, Smith has thrown touchdown passes to tight end Travis Kelce and running back Jamaal Charles. Last season, Alex Smith had five touchdown passes to Kelce, five to Charles, four to tight end Anthony Fasano, and two to running back Joe McNight.
It is hard to decide which is more surprising- the fact that the streak ended or that it existed in the first place.
And while one streak ended, another continues. Going into Week 3, the Green Bay Packers had the longest active win streak at home, with ten straight victories at Lambeau. That was extended on Monday night when the Packers beat the Chiefs 38-28. If 38 points seems like a lot, it’s only one more than their home-game average.
Next: 10-6 seems pretty good right now
