Miami Dolphins: 5 replacements for Joe Philbin
5. Kevin Sumlin
Kevin Sumlin may sound like an outlandish name to put on this list but the Texas A&M head coach is one of the hottest college football-to-NFL names out there.
The Miami Dolphins have always wanted to land a big name for their head coaching position and hiring Sumlin would fit the bill, despite him not having any NFL coaching experience.
However, Sumlin has shown the ability to produce NFL talent. He has most notably sent QBs Johnny Manziel and Case Keenum, OTs Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews, and WR Mike Evans to the league. They’ve all been part of Sumlin’s Air Raid offense, which consistently puts up high totals. It may help QB Kyle Allen become high draft pick in a year or two.
Plus, everyone holds the SEC in high regard, which Texas A&M plays in. The conference produces the closest to NFL-like games with all the talent on the field and schemes used by the teams. This may help Sumlin’s case.
Like other offensive minds mentioned in this post, Sumlin would be brought in to help get QB Ryan Tannehill, a Texas A&M alumnus, to play to his potential. Tannehill being in this dynamic offense with playmakers already in place could help him reach that elite status.
Sumlin is an intriguing name that will be mentioned by NFL teams this offseason. Could the Dolphins try to pry him away from college if they fire Joe Philbin?
