25 college football records that will never be broken
With 2,060 receiving yards in 1999 – just one season after Troy Edwards had 1,996 – Nevada wide receiver Trevor Insley established a new NCAA Division I single-season record. While that mark still stands, and appears to be well out of reach for now, it’s Insley’s 5,005 career receiving yards that makes our list as one of the top 25 college football records that will never be broken.
Insley caught 134 passes for 2,060 yards (15.4 yards per catch) and 13 touchdowns in 1999 to top off the most prolific career ever for a Division I receiver. However, Insley actually started a little slow on his march to the record book. With 36 receptions for 574 yards and five TDs as a freshman in 1996, Insley was actually a distant third on the team behind Geoff Noisy (1,435) and Damond Wilkins (1,121).
As luck would have it, Insley didn’t even lead the Wolf Pack in receiving as a sophomore – his 1,151 yards falling just behind Noisy (1,184) – or as a junior – Insley had 1,220 yards in 1998 while Noisy had 1,405. But, with Noisy finally out of the way, and with the help of an NCAA record performance as a senior, Insley led the team, the conference, and the nation in receiving for the first time.
While the 5-foot-9, 183-pound California native may have been labeled a product of the offensive system at Nevada, he still proved himself worthy of a short NFL career that included 14 receptions, 165 yards and a touchdown.
