27 best MLB nicknames of all-time
9. “Mr. October” Reggie Jackson
With an American League MVP Award, 14 All-Star Game appearances and 563 career home runs, Reggie Jackson was a Hall of Fame player without his signature moment during 1977 postseason as a member of the New York Yankees. But three swings of the bat would forever change his legacy that year.
During the 1977 World Series, Yankees catcher Thurman Munson told reporters to go talk to “Mr. October” while being interviewed, referring to Jackson. Whether this was a compliment or a subtle jab directed at an enigmatic teammate, one thing is certain: an unforgettable nickname was born at that moment.
Jackson hit a pair of home runs in Games 4 and 5. In the deciding Game 6, he connected for three consecutive home run blasts, leaving the nickname no choice but to stick.
A large part of the historic power-hitting display was Jackson’s premier talent, but another factor was tireless preparation.
"“I knew what they were going to do. I knew the ball was coming inside and that really helped me for the evening,” Jackson told CBS This Morning. “The rest is history and god-given talent and things like that. I was blessed for the evening but I had real good scouting reports.”"
Jackson’s career in New York was a roller coaster filled with plenty of ups and downs. But despite some of the controversy and negative headlines surrounding his time with the Yankees, his tenure in the Bronx will always be best remembered for his elite postseason performances.
