6. “Stan the Man” Musial

Stan Musial has arguably the most recognizable nickname in baseball history.

If you heard the call of a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game between 1941 and 1963, you almost certainly heard references to a Hall of Fame player known simply as “Stan the Man.”

For Musial, there was no definitive moment where his famous nickname was berthed. It did have a birthplace, though.

According to the New York Times, it all began at Ebbetts Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers and a venue where Musial thrived.

"“I did some phenomenal hitting there,” Musial told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “The ballpark was small, so the seats were close to the field and you could hear just about anything anybody said. Then I’d come to the plate and the fans would say, ‘Here comes that man again.’ And a sportswriter picked it up and it became Stan the Man.”"

Once the nickname picked up steam, it seemed nearly impossible to mention Musial’s name without “Stan the Man” at the beginning. He was certainly ‘the man’ in St. Louis, where he led the Cardinals to three World Series titles.

By the time he retired in 1963, Musial had recorded 24 All-Star Game appearances and seven batting titles while earning National League MVP honors three times.
