1. Iowa could go undefeated

Folks, it is very likely the Iowa Hawkeyes are going undefeated this year.

The Hawkeyes continued their great start to the season be demolishing the Northwestern Wildcats by 30 points on Saturday. The Wildcats came into the game with one of the top defenses is the country, and Iowa running back Akrum Wadley, a third-stringer, plowed through the Wildcats to the tune of 204 yards on 26 carries. Despite battling a slew of injuries, the Hawkeyes looked damn impressive on Saturday, and an undefeated regular season is an increasingly likely possibility.

Consider their schedule: having already played Wisconsin Badgers, the Hawkeyes don’t face many stiff tests the rest of the way. They have home games against the Maryland Terrapins, Minnesota Golden Gophers, and Purdue Boilermakers: all those game should be wins. The Hawkeyes have to travel to face the Indiana Hoosiers, whom they should be able to easily beat, and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Of those remaining games, the final-weekend contest against the Cornhuskers in Lincoln will be Iowa’s toughest, but Nebraska is in the midst of dysfunctional year, having blown multiple late-game leads in dramatic (and idiotic) fashion, so don’t be surprised if the Hawkeyes march into Memorial Stadium and push the Cornhuskers around.

How will the College Football Playoff committee respond to the Hawkeyes if Iowa keeps winning? It will be interesting to see. Unlike the other undefeated teams in the country, the Hawkeyes aren’t exactly thrilling to watch, and their strength of schedule isn’t all that high. But still: going undefeated in a major conference is something that can’t just be ignored. Expect the national spotlight to grow and grow as the Hawkeyes continue their spectacular 2015 campaign.
