6. Cordarrelle Patterson (WR, Minnesota Vikings)

Two short years ago, Cordarrelle Patterson was ready to emerge as the Vikings receiver of the future. He was ideally going to be the spiritual successor to Randy Moss – this is definitely an overstatement of his talent; maybe spiritual successor to Sidney Rice is more appropriate – and he was at least going to be a key piece to the Vikings rebuilding project around Teddy Bridgewater.

Now, through four games Patterson has two catches for ten yards. He caught one pass for nine yard pass against the Broncos, which for the fans of advanced statistics means he has gotten 90% of his yards against Denver. That is the only way to frame his season where it will sound impressive.

Patterson fade to the bottom of the Vikings’ depth chart has been in large part due to a lack of refinement in his game. Despite his obvious downfield talent, Patterson’s poor route running has made him less than ideal for working with the developing Bridgewater.

Possible but Not Probable Destination: San Diego Chargers

One thing that is going well for the Chargers is their passing game. Philip Rivers has been on point in San Diego, completing 71.3% of his passes for an NFL-leading 1,613 yards. Interestingly enough, the Chargers have had 21 plays of 20 yards or more in the passing game, but only 3 of 40+.

Rivers has his number one possession guy in Keenan Allen, as well as a veteran slot receiver in Stevie Johnson. The aging Malcom Floyd has never been a consistent weapon, and the offense lacks serious downfield threats – although Jacoby Jones could qualify. Patterson could stretch the defense down the field, opening up pockets for Allen and TE Antonio Gates to pick up chunk plays.

Any hope for Patterson’s development hinges on his route running, but he might find success as Rivers’ all-purpose speed receiver.
