5. Ryan Tannehill (QB, Miami Dolphins)

After the Dolphins opening season debacle – particularly their collapse in London against the Jets – the Dolphins underwent their almost biennial* tradition of a locker room-based panic.

  • Two years ago, the issue was surrounding Richie Incognito bullying fellow offensive lineman Jonathan Martin.
  • Four years ago was the 0-9 record, the sacrifice of head coach Tony Sparano and the beginning of calls to tar and feather GM Jeff Ireland.
  • It skipped six years ago.
  • Eight years ago, the Dolphins loudly went 1-15 under the limp-wristed coaching of Cam Cameron.

This year, following the firing of Joe Philbin, news came out that Ryan Tannehill had been a meanie to the Dolphins practice squad players.

From The Sun Sentinel:

"During an exchange with linebacker Chris McCain, who picked off a poorly thrown pass from Tannehill, the team’s starting quarterback told the defenders “enjoy your practice squad paychecks,” a source said."

Of course, this ended up being largely disproven. But the damage has been done. Tannehill has gone from a promising dual-threat quarterback to a dead end for the Dolphins future, too good to call a straight bust but too inconsistent to carry the Dolphins very far.

Possible but Not Probable Destination: New York Jets

If Tannehill leaves Miami, it probably won’t be until after the 2015 season ends. A new coach might still want to build around him. There might be enough changes with the Dolphins that Tannehill may get a change in scenery just by staying in Miami.

If not, he could choose to move up the coast and head for New Jersey. The Jets have the top tier defense, and adding a multi-faceted quarterback to at least compete – and of course surrounding him with a power running game and tall possessions receivers – could end up transforming Tannehill’s career

*Look it up.
