30 greatest NFL rivalries of all-time
15. Green Bay Packers – Minnesota Vikings
The rivalry between the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings hardly started as such.
In the early days of the series, the Vince Lombardi-led Packers would throttle the Vikings regularly. Green Bay won 11 of 14 meeting with Lombardi at the helm, as Minnesota struggled to find steady ground as an expansion team.
That changed in the 1970s, as the Packers would win just three out of 20 contests, while the Vikings made several Super Bowl Appearances.
Since then, however, a rivalry has been born through parity, thrilling finishes and tight battles for the NFC North crown.
The rivalry took on a whole new meaning in 2009, though, when former Packers legend Brett Favre suited up in Vikings purple and gold. Favre essentially was shown the door in Green Bay after a prolific career that included a Super Bowl victory in favor of promising young quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a former first round pick who had patiently waited for his turn to take the reins of the offense.
Favre led Minnesota to a victory over Green Bay that year, and played a vital role in their run to the NFC Championship Game, where they fell just short of a Super Bowl berth. The Packers got revenge the following year.
Although Green Bay has dominated the series as of late, winning nine of the past 11 meetings, the rivalry has been relatively close throughout its history. Green Bay leads the series with a record of 58-49-2, with its lead only being extended in in the past few years.
