30 greatest World Series in MLB history
10. San Francisco Giants vs. Anaheim Angels, 2002
The 2002 World Series pitted two championship-starved franchises from the state of California against each other.
The Anaheim Angels were making their first World Series appearance in team history, while the San Francisco Giants were looking to end a 48-year title drought.
The series featured four one-run games, three of which were decided in the eighth inning. This trend of close contests was temporarily put on hold in Game 5, as the Giants blew out the Angels by a score of 16-4. The loss put Anaheim one game away from elimination, setting up a memorable Game 6.
San Francisco appeared on its way to another blowout, carrying a five-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Angels turned the tables, however, by recording three runs in each of the next two frames and holding on for a 6-5 victory. Anaheim picked up its first ever World Series title the following night after holding the Giants to just one run on six hits, winning Game 7 by a score of 4-1.
Giants outfielder Barry Bonds delivered one of the greatest World Series performances of all-time, recording a .471 batting average, .700 on-base percentage, four home runs and six RBI during a losing effort. It was the only time that Bonds would reach the World Series during his illustrious and controversial career.
