Draft Picks

One year removed from taking a huge gamble with their first round pick by selecting the ultimate young-player-with-tremendous-upside in Bruno Caboclo, the Raptors were again picking in the mid-to-late part of the first round at No. 20. They went much more conservative than the previous year, though, selecting point guard Delon Wright out of Utah.

DELON WRIGHT. B.
There’s a chance that Wright could see minutes in the Raptors backcourt at some points in the season and he’s more than capable of doing so, depending on the health of Lowry and Joseph and how rotations wind up playing out. He’s not a tremendously versatile scorer as he has limited range on his jumper, but he has a high basketball IQ that should translate well to him running an NBA offense in addition to being a long, sound defender on the perimeter.
. PG. Utah Utes

Toronto also acquired the 46th overall pick as a part of the Greivis Vasquez trade, which they ultimately used on another guard in Norman Powell out of UCLA.

B.
Powell slipped on draft boards for both his lack of size at the shooting guard position and his limited jump shot ability. However, he’s blessed with tremendous athleticism and speed and has great potential as a defensive pest coming off of the bench. He’s likely not going to see time, but he’s a good potential project for the Raptors to try and develop moving forward.
. SG. UCLA Bruins. NORMAN POWELL
