5 trade destinations for Colin Kaepernick
By Dani Bostick
The Cleveland Browns have drafted two quarterbacks in the first round in the last four years. In 2012 they plucked Brandon Weeden from Oklahoma State. In 2014 it was Johnny Manziel from Texas A&M.
Weeden is no longer with the team, and has proven himself to be an NFL bust, while Manziel has underperformed to the extent that the team brought in 36-year-old Josh McCown as starter.
Since the Browns have not found the quarterback of their future through the draft, perhaps a veteran quarterback is their best option. At 28, Kaepernick is much younger than McCown and would have time to adjust and adapt to the Browns system.
Furthermore, the Browns have already indicated they are willing to make bold moves to improve the team. Recently, they have discussed trading left tackle Joe Thomas and linebacker Barkevious Mingo. Even center Alex Mack was rumored to be on the trading block until he decided not to waive his no-trade clause to make that possible.
Kaepernick has had an atrocious season so far with the 49ers under new head coach Jim Tomsula. Quarterbacks coach Kevin O’Connell is a former NFL quarterback whose first coaching job has been with the Browns. Offensive coordinator John DeFilippo is also a relative newcomer to the NFL. From 2012-2014 he was the quarterbacks coach with the Raiders where he helped develop Derek Carr.
A change of scenery and coaching staff could help Kaepernick improve his game. Likewise, the Browns situation at quarterback couldn’t be much worse. They might be in the mood to take a gamble on Kaepernick and stop taking their chances in the draft.
