85-77, 3rd in AL West

With the best player in the game on the roster, some aging veterans and an astronomical payroll, the Angels were certainly in win-now mode this season. Los Angeles fell well short of its goals in 2015 by failing to reach the playoffs, leaving the team with some serious questions for the future.

Mike Trout did his part and more with a 9.0 WAR season per FanGraphs, besting his total from last season’s MVP campaign. Albert Pujols also had a productive season, including his first 40-homer season since 2011.

The problem was the rest of the offense could get absolutely nothing going. Los Angeles’ next best hitter at the plate was David Freese, who posted an 110 wRC+ according to FanGraphs while missed significant time due to injury.

Paying Josh Hamilton $63 million to play for a division rival isn’t exactly ideal, and his huge contract is going to be a major issue over the next several years. Pujols is also getting very expensive, and Trout will not be this good forever.

That means the Angels need to win quickly with this current window. Los Angeles has several free agents, and will have to do so with an entirely new front office with Jerry Dipoto, Matt Klentak and several assistants now elsewhere.

Failure. The Angels missed the playoffs in a prime year of Mike Trout, and now the front office is gutted.
