90-72, NL East champions, lost World Series

Coming into the season, it looked like the Mets would take a major step forward in 2015 while even possibly contending for a Wild Card spot. New York more than exceeded those expectations by reaching the World Series and should be thrilled with how the saeason played out despite the bitter ending.

The Mets’ strength was a hard-throwing young pitching core that arrived a year early. Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz were all great in the regular season before leading New York on a memorable postseason run.

However, New York certainly didn’t cruise to the NL East division title. A great start was soon negated by soon negated by an anemic offense, as the Mets posted losing records in May and June.

It was a few shrewd trade deadline moves that made the difference for the Mets this season. After a deal to acquire Carlos Gomez fell through, New York ended up with Yoenis Cespedes, who posted a 157 wRC+ with the team per FanGraphs.

This won’t be an easy offseason, as Cespedes and Daniel Murphy are both expected to leave in free agency. Still, the Mets have to be thrilled with how far they made it this season and how promising the future looks.

Success. The ending will hurt for a long time, but the Mets should be back in title contention soon enough.
