84-78, 2nd in NL West

The defending champs continued a pattern of down years following World Series title runs, finishing eight games behind Los Angeles in the NL West. Several factors were behind San Francisco’s playoff miss, but the Giants will feel as though they could have done better in 2015.

San Francisco featured a productive offense that surprisingly led the NL in wRC+ according to FanGraphs. However, the Giants simply suffered too many injuries to be in a position to chase down the Dodgers or either of the two strong Wild Card teams.

Things got off to a bad start, as Hunter Pence suffered a broken forearm in spring training and was only able to play in 52 games. Joe Panik, Brandon Crawford and Nori Aoki all missed significant time down the stretch, when the playoff race finally got away from the Giants.

Madison Bumgarner put together the best regular season of his career to lead the pitching staff, but the rest of the rotation was unreliable and also dealt with multiple injuries. Former stars Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain were severely limited, and both could be headed to the bullpen full-time in the future.

The Giants still have a talented roster led by Buster Posey and should be back in 2016, but a healthy team could have done so much more.

Failure. Injuries may have been more to blame than anything, but the defending champs need to at least make the playoffs to be considered a success.
