Each MLB team’s season success or failure?
Chicago White Sox
76-86, 4th in AL Central.
With a core of Chris Sale and Jose Abreu, the White Sox figured it was time to go all in and made a number of moves this offseason. Both of those players produced, but Chicago struggled otherwise and will have to seriously reevaluate things this winter.
The White Sox were held back by a position player group that put up historically bad numbers for the first couple months of the season. New acquisition Adam LaRoche posted just a 75 wRC+ per FanGraphs, while Melky Cabrera wasn’t much better. Adam Eaton’s slow start didn’t help matters, although he bounced back nicely by the end of the year and will be a key player moving forward.
Only four White Sox position players were able to post a WAR above 1.0 according to FanGraphs. With a lot of holes and little depth, Chicago will have to do a lot of work this offseason to compete in the AL Central in 2016.
On the pitching side, Carlos Rodon joined Sale and Jose Quintana to form a solid enough trio at the top of the rotation. Depth was again an issue, as Jeff Samardzija struggled in his first season with the White Sox and will now hit free agency.
This year’s performance puts the White Sox in a complicated position heading into the offseason. Chicago should be in contention while Sale, Abreu and Eaton are still on team-friendly contracts, but there are a lot of holes to address.
Failure. The offseason acquisitions did not work out for the most part, and now the White Sox are awkwardly stuck between rebuilding and contention.
