80. 2012 San Francisco Giants

94-68, NL West Champions, Won World Series 4-0 Over Detroit

After the San Francisco Giants won the World Series in 1954, fans had to wait 56 years for the franchise to win another World Championship. The wait wasn’t nearly as long following the 2010 title as the Giants captured another only two seasons later.

The 2012 San Francisco Giants won the National League West easily with an eight-game cushion in the final standings over the rival Los Angeles Dodgers. However, the team itself was far from a juggernaut by most standards.

Though the Giants’ lineup featured NL MVP Buster Posey, who won the batting title with a .336 average, the 25-year old catcher’s 24 home runs doubled the team’s next highest total. San Francisco managed just 103 home runs all season, which ranked dead last in the Major Leagues.

The Giants pitching staff featured a solid starting rotation led by Matt Cain (16-5, 2.79) and Madison Bumgarner (16-11, 3.37), and one of the best bullpens in baseball, but ranked only fifth in the National League with a 3.68 team ERA.

San Francisco certainly gets bonus points for a four-game World Series sweep of the Detroit Tigers, but was pushed to the limit in a 3-2 series victory over Cincinnati in the NLDS and a 4-3 NLCS win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
