Hank Greenberg won his first MVP Award with a .328/.452/.450 slash and a league-leading 36 home runs and 168 RBI. Charlie Gehringer (.330/.409/.502, 19 HR, 111 RBI), Goose Goslin (.292/.355/.415, 9 HR, 111 RBI) and Mickey Cochrane (.319/.452/.450) also provided plenty of offensive firepower.

The pitching staff was similarly talented, with Schoolboy Rowe (19-13, 3.69) and Tommy Bridges (21-10, 3.51) leading the way. Detroit ranked No. 2 in the AL in ERA (3.82) and led the league with 87 complete games and 16 shutouts.
