95-58, NL Champions, Won World Series 4-3 Over Detroit

The 1934 St. Louis Cardinals, also known by the nickname “The Gashouse Gang,” won the National League pennant for the fifth time in nine seasons, and captured the franchise’s third World Championship over that same time period.

After posting solid numbers in two-plus seasons with the club, 24-year old Dizzy Dean exploded in 1934 with a big league-best 30-7 record and 2.66 ERA across 311.2 innings. Dean also led the National League with seven shutouts and 195 strikeouts and was voted the MVP Award winner.

First baseman Ripper Collins was the team’s most valuable offensive player. Collins hit .333/.393/.615 and led the NL with 35 home runs, a .615 slugging percentage and a 1.008 OPS, and also collected 40 doubles, 12 triples, scored 116 runs and drove in 128. He finished sixth in the MVP voting.

After winning the National League by two games over the New York Giants, the Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers in a back-and-forth World Series, with Dean earning the Game 7 victory via shutout in an 11-0 rout. It was Dean’s second victory in three starts in the series.
