69. 1922 New York Giants
93-61, NL Champions, Won World Series 4-0-1 Over New York
It seems strange, but there were 18 editions of the World Series before the New York Yankees won one. The Yankees won the AL pennant twice before they captured the first World Championship in franchise history, in 1921 and 1922, and lost to the crosstown New York Giants both times.
In 1922, the Giants won four of the five games in the Fall Classic, though Game 2 actually ended in a 3-3 tie after ten innings. The other games were also close, low-scoring contests, with the Giants winning by a single run in Game 1 and Game 4 and never winning by more than three runs in a single game.
The Giants posted a 93-61 record during the regular season to earn their spot in the World Series by a full seven games over the Cincinnati Reds. New York boasted the best pitching staff in the league, led by Art Nehf (19-13, 3.29), Jesse Barnes (13-8, 3.51), Phil Douglas (11-4, 2.63) and Rosy Ryan (17-12, 3.01). Irish Meusel (.331/.369/.509, 17 HR, 132 RBI) and High Pockets Kelly (.328/.363/.497, 17 HR, 107 RBI) led an offense that hit a collective .305/.363/.428.
