34. 1941 New York Yankees
101-53, AL Champions, Won World Series 4-1 Over Brooklyn
With a powerful lineup that featured three outfielders with at least 30 home runs, the 1941 New York Yankees roared to the American League pennant with a 101-53 regular season record, which was an eye-popping 17 games better than second place Boston.
AL MVP Joe DiMaggio hit .357/.440/.643 with 43 doubles, 11 triples, 30 home runs and a big league-leading 125 RBI, and also set one of Major League Baseball’s most unbreakable records with a 56-game hitting streak. DiMaggio shared the outfield with Charlie Keller (.298/.416/.580, 33 HR, 122 RBI) and Tommy Henrich (.277/.377/.519, 31 HR, 85 RBI) and Joe Gordon added 24 homers and 87 RBI for a squad that led all of baseball with 151 long balls – 27 more than the next closest team.
But, despite such offensive firepower, the Yankees relied on pitching to defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers 4-1 in the World Series. Red Ruffing, Marius Russo, and Tiny Bonham all earned complete game victories in the series and star reliever Johnny Murphy captured a win out of the bullpen.
