With Dave Dombrowksi now running the show, the Red Sox seem likely to add multiple pieces in free agency and quickly enter win-now mode. As payroll is not a concern, Boston makes perhaps the most sense as a landing spot for Price.

The Red Sox would love to quickly move on from a miserable 2015 campaign that saw them finish with 78 wins after being among the World Series favorites entering the spring. Free agent acquisitions Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval turned in below replacement seasons, but most of Boston’s problems from its pitching woes.

Boston thought it could succeed behind a great offense and a rotation that was solid top to bottom on paper but didn’t include a front-line starter. Instead, Rick Porcello, Joe Kelly and Justin Masterson were all far worse than expected, and the Red Sox fell out of contention quickly.

However, Boston is one of the teams best equipped to bounce back quickly from such a season. The Red Sox have a ton of young talent, some of which is already contributing in the Majors, and enough financial resources to fix any potential holes.

Many of those promising young prospects are position players, but starters like Henry Owens and Eduardo Rodriguez look like solid pieces moving forward. A healthy season from Clay Buchholz would also help matters, although the Red Sox shouldn’t count on that at this point.

What’s missing is a reliable, front-line ace. Price fits that role perfectly, and would help Boston get back into contention right away.

Dombrowski has also been interested in Price before, as he acquired him from the Tampa Bay Rays at the 2014 deadline while running the Tigers. Overall, the Red Sox look like the favorites to land Price entering the offseason, and the fit makes plenty of sense.
