Top 5 potential landing spots for David Price
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs may not necessarily need another ace, but still make sense as a potential suitor. Theo Epstein and company are willing to do whatever it takes payroll-wise for Chicago to win a title, and Price could help the team make the next leap from contender to champion.
Chicago has amassed plenty of young talent in recent seasons, which paid off quicker than many expected. The Cubs won 97 games and advanced to the NLCS with a very young team in 2015, and should be among the World Series favorites next spring.
There are very few holes for the Cubs to address, as a number of young position players have already put together strong seasons in the Majors. The pitching is also in good shape, as Jake Arrieta turned in a historic season and Jon Lester was his usually steady self.
As good as those top two are, any rotation is going to benefit from adding Price. It’s fair to expect some sort of regression from Arrieta, and adding Price at the top would help Chicago sort out the back-end of the rotation, which was a bit of a revolving door at times in 2015.
A rotation composed of that elite trio plus Kyle Hendricks and Jason Hammel would look very good on paper for both the regular season and playoffs. The Cubs’ window to win is now, so adding another marquee free agent like Price would be an understandable move.
Price may have some interest in reuniting with former manager Joe Maddon, so the Cubs should be considered among the favorites.
