After a big leap forward this season, the Astros are a dark-horse contender for a number of top free agents like Price. Adding Price could help Houston take the next step and become even more of a long-term contender.

Houston’s multi-year rebuild finally paid off in 2015, as the Astros won 86 games and qualified for the postseason as a Wild Card. The Astros are already loaded with young talent and plenty more is on the way, so adding a veteran front-line pitcher could be a huge springboard for the next several seasons.

The Astros’ rotation is already in good shape even if Scott Kazmir leaves in free agency, with Cy Young candidate Dallas Keuchel leading the way. Mike Fiers is solid in the middle and some young pitchers like Lance McCullers have already shown huge upside.

Adding Price could give the Astros an outstanding top two in their rotation. That could be necessary for Houston to compete long-term in the AL West, as the Texas Rangers are set to have Yu Darvish and Cole Hamles lead their rotation for the foreseeable future.

The Astros don’t have the payroll of some of the other teams in contention for Price, but also don’t have too much money already locked up. If the Astros decide this is the time to go all in, which looks like the right move, expect them to be in on Price and other top pitchers.
