Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are sort of a mess right now. That said, they could probably persuade Johnny Cueto to join the AL East because they’re desperate for an ace. There’s nothing more dangerous in free agency than a big market time with such an obvious need.

Cueto said that he’s open to signing with the Red Sox back in August.

"“It depends,” said Cueto on if he would sign with the Red Sox after this season. “Because I’m a free agent, and I’m just going to pick the best choice to go. The main thing — I would like to come here because it’s a championship-caliber team.”"

President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has a record of making huge splashes if he thinks it’s going to help the team. Cueto would certainly do that. He’d give them a viable ace, something that they have lacked since losing Jon Lester. Cueto is a Dominican. Perhaps he’d like to play with his good friend David Ortiz? Ortiz could be the guy who helps Johnny Cueto win another World Series.

The biggest issue with the Red Sox is that they would need to persuade Johnny Cueto that they actually are a championship team. It’s one thing to keep your obvious options open during a contract year. It’s quite another to sign with a team believing that they are a championship team. Dave Dombrowski has his work cut out for him. If he can sell the team’s quality to Cueto and make him believe that they are worth joining, that’s exactly what Boston signed Dombrowski to do.
