The new James Bond film Spectre is projected to exit its opening weekend with $73 million at the domestic box office.

Box Office Mojo is reporting that the 24th James Bond film, Spectre, grossed $73 million in its opening weekend. The film opened in 3,221 theaters on Thursday Nov. 5, where it drew in $5.25 million.

The previous Bond film, Skyfall, only played in 463 theaters on its Thursday sneak preview, but it still managed to rake in $2.2 million.

Box Office Mojo’s estimate of $73 million is markedly lower than Skyfall’s opening week numbers. Skyfall grossed $88.2 million in its opening weekend; the most successful opening in the Bond franchise.

The cause for this Bond decline likely stems from critical reception of Spectre, which is much more lukewarm than the critically acclaimed Skyfall. However, it is hard to truly call Spectre a decline, as its projected debut is the second highest grossing Bond opening weekend to date.

Spectre opened to minimal competition. The Martian is finally waning at the box office, and The Peanuts Movie is not the type of movie to draw viewers away from James Bond.

This meager competition will likely continue into next weekend. Films like The 33 and Angelina Jolie’s By the Sea don’t scream box office bread and butter.

Nov. 20 will probably spell the downfall of Spectre at the box office with the release of the final film in the Hunger Games franchise. Either way, the jury is still out as to whether Spectre will outperform its predecessor in its full run. The film has already grossed $223 million internationally.
