Spectre Was So Expensive That It May Struggle to Break Even

Spectre needs to gross over half a billion dollars worldwide to break even, according to Collider.

Spectre may have had the second biggest James Bond opening weekend gross domestically. It may be doing great in the overseas market. However, according to Collider, the film needs to gross $650 million before it can even begin to turn a profit.

The latest Bond film grossed $70 million at the domestic box office last weekend, far shy of its predecessor Skyfall, which grossed $88.3 million in its domestic debut. Despite this, Spectre still has the second biggest opening in the film franchise. Add to this that the film has grossed almost $220 million at the international box office, and it would be easy to think that Eon Productions has reason to celebrate their latest Bond baby.

This isn’t quite the case.

Spectre ran a production budget of $245 million. According to Collider, the marketing campaign cost over $100 million, and the exhibition costs will run the overall cost up all the higher.

Lackluster reviews will certainly hinder the overall success of Spectre, and upcoming releases, such as the final Hunger Games film, will be sure to run the film out of first run theaters by early to mid December.

This being said, I don’t think the film will fail to reach a profit margin. It might not be the most profitable Bond film, given the astronomical success of Skyfall. But it certainly has some staying power at the box office given a tepid October.

This upcoming weekend, Spectre will have little competition in terms of new releases. The surprising success of The Peanuts Movie may cause the film to have a second successful weekend, but Spectre will likely profit as well.

Long story short, the James Bond franchise isn’t likely going to suffer anything more than a flesh wound. But, who knows what questions will be raised inside Eon Productions about this quasi-flop.
