Top 5 potential landing spots for Jordan Zimmermann
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox are desperate to add a front-line starting pitcher and have the financial resources to outbid just about anyone to do so. Price appears to be the likely target, but Zimmermann could certainly come into play if the Red Sox can’t work a deal out.
Boston came into 2015 as one of the favorites to win the World Series, but fell out of contention quickly and finished last in the AL East. There was plenty of blame to go around, including new acquisitions Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez turning in miserable years, but the rotation may have been the biggest culprit of all.
Rick Porcello and Joe Kelly were among those who fell well below expectations. While there are a few promising young pitchers in Boston’s system, a true top-of-the-rotation pitchers appears to be the team’s biggest weakness.
Zimmermann may not be exactly that, but he could help enough right away to generate enough interest. Dave Dombrowksi is now running the show in Boston, and will likely want the Red Sox’ rotation to improve quickly with plenty of young position player talent already contributing in the Majors and more on the way.
There’s always the possibility that the Red Sox could add an ace and one more starter, so Zimmermann is definitely on the team’s radar.
