50. Byrd Stadium (Maryland)

There hasn’t been much to cheer about lately for Maryland football fans, but knowing that the Terrapins play in one of the best venues in the Big Ten has to be somewhat of a consolation prize. I mean, going to home games only to watch the Terrapins get lit up on the scoreboard is never fun, but at least the stadium is nice.

Not only is Byrd Stadium just miles from Washington D.C. – and on a beautiful day, you can see the buildings in the nation’s capital from the stadium – but it actually played host to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip back in the 1950s when they got their first taste of American football.

Opening in September of 1950, Byrd Stadium plays host to over 50,000 fans every home Saturday in the fall. It is one of the most historic venues out there.

The fans who occupy Byrd Stadium, also known as Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium, has been renovated multiple times since its opening and is one of the only venues in the nation to use “CoolPlay” which is a type of artificial turf which keeps the field about 15 degrees cooler than usual.

If you’re a fan of scenic backgrounds and historic value, Maryland is the place to be.
