Drew Brees throws a game sealing interception to Washington’s Dashon Goldson, who returned it for a 35-yard touchdown. Washington’s lead was then 43-14.

With over 14 minutes remaining in the New Orleans Saints‘ road game versus the Washington Redskins, Drew Brees throws an unfortunate interception that essentially sealed the deal for Washington. Washington defensive back Dashon Goldson was able to corral the tipped pass thrown at Saints wide receiver Marques Colston for an easy 35-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Though New Orleans immediately received the ball back after the pick six, not even 14-plus minutes is enough time for Drew Brees to overcome a 30 point deficit. After winning a major shootout with the New York Giants 52-49 in Week 8, the Saints will have likely lost their second game in a row and will fall to 4-6 on the year.

The loss at home versus the then 1-6 Tennessee Titans in overtime seems to have a lingering effect. New Orleans needed to recover in a big way with their road game at FedEx Field, but having six losses in their division all but puts them out of the race in the NFC South. A certain loss to Washington would put New Orleans three losses back of arch rival in Atlanta, who is idle, for second and at least five back of Carolina, who leads Tennessee in Nashville late.

It seems that Brees has to do everything for this Saints team, as the defense is not stopping anybody. With the interception by Goldson, Washington remains very much alive in the tight NFC East. That would bring Washington back to a game of .500 at 4-5 and in the mix with New York and Philadelphia in the division. In what was a “loser-go-home” type of game, it’s obvious that the Redskins and Saints are heading in different directions after their Week 10 matchup.
