The St. Louis Rams will make a change at quarterback in Week 11, starting Case Keenum

The St. Louis Rams were a team gaining momentum in the NFL just a few weeks ago behind the emergence of rookie running back Todd Gurley as a superstar. However, after consecutive losses in the past two weeks to the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears, respectively, and dropping to 4-5 on the year, head coach Jeff Fisher has decided it’s time to make a change from Nick Foles at quarterback.

Late Monday afternoon, Fisher announced that Foles would be moving to the bench and that Case Keenum would be the starting quarterback in St. Louis for Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens:

Keenum, a Houston Cougars product, is in his fourth NFL season after signing with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He spent two seasons with the Texans from 2012-13 before signing with the Rams last season. He was then waived and put on the Rams’ practice squad in 2014 before beings signed again by the Texans. St. Louis acquired Keenum once again in March of this year for a seventh-round pick.

Despite his movement throughout the league, Keenum has experience from his days with the Texans. He played in eight games in the 2013 season and two games last year after Houston signed him once again. For his career, Keenum has completed 55.2 percent of his 330 career attempts for 2,195 yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Keenum has shown flashes at times in his sporadic appearances in the NFL after being highly prolific in college as a passer. That was apparently more than enough to inspire Fisher to make the change from Foles in St. Louis.

After starting out the year with a bang in an overtime victory over the Seattle Seahawks, Foles has thrown for 200 yards or more just once in the last eight games and has just six touchdown passes to his six interceptions. It was becoming increasingly clear that he’s not the answer at quarterback, so it’s hard to argue with Fisher’s reasoning to make the change now while there’s still hope for the season. If there’s ever a time to do it, it’s before facing one of the worst passing defenses in the NFL in the Ravens.
