Who Should Be the Next Bond: Damian Lewis

Daniel Craig may play Bond one more time, or he might be done for good. Either way, it is time to think ahead to who may be the next secret agent.

With Daniel Craig’s comments about not wanting to continue playing James Bond through his five movie contract, speculation has been building throughout the past few months about who will take up the gauntlet of the 00-agent.

At the top of this list, seemingly, is Damian Lewis.

In late September, The Sunday Mirror reported that an unnamed source confirmed Lewis as Craig’s successor if he were to leave before his contract is up.

Whether this is true or not, the William Hill booking site currently has Lewis’ odds at 5/2, right there in contention with Tom Hardy, who also rests at 5/2.

Lewis is leading the pack of possible actors, but would he be a good choice?

Lewis has had a solid acting career. Recently coming off of Homeland, a massively acclaimed Showtime show, he could seemingly do anything. He also has a great turn in the huge, Golden Globe winning miniseries Band of Brothers. Lewis himself has won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for Homeland.

As is the problem with most actors up for the role, age is an issue. Lewis is 44 years old. Someone a bit younger, like Tom Hardy (38), may be a smarter choice for a new Bond actor who may be wrapped into a five film contract like Craig was. The film’s are generally two to three years apart. Five films down the road, Lewis will be well into his fifties.

This said, his acting isn’t a detriment in any way. I think Lewis would take up the role smoothly.
