With a weak class of free agents at relief pitcher, many teams are turning to the trade market to address their weakness at the position. Sipp is arguably the best available reliever other than Darren O’Day, and shouldn’t come at a massive cost.

The veteran was a huge underrated reason that the Houston Astros were able to turn around what had been an awful bullpen and make the postseason ahead of schedule. Sipp posted a 1.99 ERA (2.93 FIP) with 62 strikeouts in 54.1 innings last year according to FanGraphs.

While relievers are very volatile year to year, Sipp has been solid for the vast majority of his career. Sipp won’t bet getting a long contract at 32 years old, but still should have a couple of strong years left in him.

At the very least, whoever adds Sipp will be getting a reliable quality left-hander. There are worse ways to spend around $5 million a year, and Sipp will easily live up to that contract if he can continue his form of the past two seasons.

Anybody who needs bullpen help should consider taking a look at Sipp. The Tigers don’t have the farm system to trade for top relievers, so Sipp would be a good addition.
