Who Should Be the Next Bond: Michael Fassbender

Daniel Craig is on his way out as James Bond. Could Michael Fassbender handle the role?

After Spectre, Daniel Craig has one more film in his contract as MI6 secret agent James Bond, and he may not even come back for that one. Given this, the speculations as to who his successor will be have been all over Bond news.

One name that gets mentioned frequently is Michael Fassbender. Could Fassbender handle the role? And would he take it?

In a press interview for X-Men: First Class in 2011, ScreenRant asked Fassbender about the possibility of playing Bond, and he was rather aloof about his feelings on the matter:

"I really don’t plan anything ever because it never seems to work … I’m sort of in the middle of doing [Prometheus]. And, you know, Daniel [Craig] is doing a great job. We’ll see what happens. I’m very flattered that people are sort of making that link, but – I don’t know. We’ll see."

This was four years ago, though. Prometheus is in the tank. Of course, Fassbender is all the more popular now than he was in 2011. One would expect him to be even busier nowadays given his fame.

The upcoming X-Men installment X-Men: Apocalypse is in post-production, but Fassbender is already filming the new Assassin’s Creed film. He is also slated to appear in the new Ridley Scott film Alien: Covenant and crime drama The Snowman from Let the Right One In director Thomas Alfredson.

Fassbender’s a busy man, but that doesn’t mean he can’t take on a Bond contract if he desired it.

The 38 year old actor is seemingly in the prime place in his career to take on the role. He is experienced but not too old to take on an action role of this magnitude.

That being said, Fassbender is a versatile actor at the height of his career. He could take any role he wanted to, it seems. Do we want to see an actor of that caliber to take on Bond?

This humble writer says no. Fassbender is a great actor who would do swimmingly as Bond. However, I would rather see him take on more risky roles (check out Frank if you disagree). I think maybe it is time for a younger actor to take on the role. An unknown, even, if he is vetted well enough.
