Potential Targets

It would be a shock if the Diamondbacks finished the offseason without acquiring one or more starting pitchers. The big question is what Arizona’s payroll limitation will be, given the team’s contention window is about to open.

Even if the team is willing to expand its payroll, it seems unlikely that the Diamondbacks could add a $200 million contract. That means Johnny Cueto is Arizona’s most likely target at the top-of-the-rotation, and the team is rumored to be discussing acquiring him according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Fortunately for the Diamondbacks, this is a good offseason to be in the market for pitching even if the club is unable to acquire one of the three aces available. Jordan Zimmermann or Mike Leake would be good fits for the team, so expect the Diamondbacks to look at both. Yovani Gallardo would also be a solid addition on a three-or-four year deal.

Beyond that, the Diamondbacks could sign a veteran bounce-back candidate like Justin Masterson to compete for the final rotation spot in spring or add bullpen depth. Japanese starter Kenta Maeda has also been connected to the team and could be posted soon.

Arizona was interested in Aroldis Chapman last trade deadline and may make another run at acquiring him, but may look elsewhere given how good Ziegler was in the closer role. Darren O’Day is the best reliever available and would generate some interest, although the Diamondbacks may be better acquiring relief help through the trade market.
