3. Leon Lett costs the Cowboys (1993)

The Dallas Cowboys were in the midst of establishing themselves as a dynasty in 1993 when they welcomed the Miami Dolphins to Texas Stadium on Thanksgiving. Dallas had the lead late in the fourth quarter, but the Dolphins were setting up to take a field goal. Luckily for Dallas, they were able to get a hand on the field goal attempt and that should have ended the game. Enter Leon Lett, no stranger to historic gaffes, to create a moment NFL and Cowboys fans will never forget.

The game itself was already crazy as the Texas Stadium field was uncharacteristically covered in snow. After the Cowboys blocked the kick, the ball was left spinning on the snow-covered turf. The game should have been over, but Lett inexplicably ran over to the ball, slid to try to down it, and ended up kicking and making it a live ball. The Dolphins recovered and were able to get another shot at a game-winning field goal. This one wasn’t blocked and was good for the Miami win.

Lett was a solid NFL player, but this moment on Thanksgiving and his fumble in the Super Bowl the previous year will always be what lives on in the memories of fans. Particularly the moment in the 1993 Thanksgiving game, there’s just no reasoning why he would even risk going near that football, especially with the snow making it such an unpredictable surface. Yet, in he came and ultimately cost the eventual Super Bowl champs the game.
