Spectre is the Second Highest Grossing James Bond Film

After a month in theaters, Spectre has become the second highest grossing Bond film in the franchise.

Spectre might not be the best James Bond film. It has its roots in classic 007 formula, while still clinging to the previously established Craig Bond formula.

Regardless of this, the latest Bond installment has become the second highest grossing film in the franchise at the worldwide box office.

The film’s day in the sun at the box office is essentially over, but it is still hanging around in the top ten.

Currently, the film has grossed over $750 million worldwide. Much of this profit has come from the international box office, with only $178 million coming from the domestic box office.

The most profitable Bond film is Craig’s previous installment, Skyfall, which made an uncharacteristic amount of money for Bond. Skyfall took in over $300 million domestically, and it is the sole Bond film to break the $1 billion mark internationally.

Spectre‘s success is largely due to a lack of competition. After a lackluster box office month in October, where The Martian was the only substantial success, Spectre opened to an open field. Even with the modest success of The Peanuts MovieSpectre was the only real option for audiences until the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part Two.

Bond is an interesting beast. Despite its protagonist’s egregiously of-his-time nature, the franchise continues to find success. 53 years later, Bond is still making multi-millions.

So, when will Bond cease to be relevant? The longest running film franchise under a single production company shows no signs of slowing moving into Bond 25, which is set to begin production in Spring 2016.

Seemingly, Bond has no end. The spy will be drinking martinis when we’re all traveling by jetpacks and invisible cars.
