High Salary D

Dustin Byfuglien-Winnipeg Jets ($6,500): Byfuglien is the most expensive defenseman in the early group of games. He has a tough matchup with Braden Holtby and the Capitals, but even when he’s not scoring goals, he will get you fantasy points with his high volume of shots and assists. He currently has points in his last four games and is averaging nearly four fantasy points per contest. Byfuglien is a popular pick every time he plays and can bring great production to a position that is sometimes lacking.

Erik Karlsson-Ottawa Senators ($7,400): Ottawa’s star blue liner the second-most expensive defenseman tonight behind San Jose’s Brent Burns. Karlsson has blossomed into one of the best defenseman in the league and is a threat to find the score sheet every single night he’s on the ice. Although he doesn’t’ necessarily score a lot of goals, he certainly assists on many. He has 24 assists in 25 games and recorded three helpers on Thursday against Chicago. If you saved money on the wingers today you should be able to comfortably afford the services of Karlsson.

High Value D

Shayne Gostisbehere-Philadelphia Flyers ($3,400): Gostisbehere is once again a top value pick at the defenseman position. He’ll likely stay here until his salary rises beyond his production. Because of his low salary and high production, Gostisbehere often carries a high ownership number. However, he’s been a breath of fresh air for the struggling flyers and has points in his last two games with a goal on Tuesday and an assist last night. As long as Gostisbehere has a solid role with the Flyers he should continued to be deployed each time he takes the ice.

Jared Spurgeon-Minnesota Wild ($4,500): Spurgeon is getting good ice time for the Wild and putting up decent fantasy numbers for his price. He is by no means a goal-scorer, with just three in 24 games, but he has a respectable number of assists (11) and also earns fantasy points with his ability and willingness to block shots. Spurgeon is averaging just over three fantasy points per game, not bad for someone at his price. Tonight he goes up against a Colorado team that ranks 21st versus opposing defenders. He’s recorded assists in each of his last two games and will look to do the same tonight. Get some value here at a cheap price and have more money to spend elsewhere.

Dion Phaneuf-Toronto Maple Leafs ($4,100): There are a lot of great offensive players tonight you’ll want to spend your money on. Because of that, you’ll have to reach for some value at other positions. Dion Phaneuf faces a tough matchup with St. Louis but could offer you could value in terms of a low salary along with low ownership. He doesn’t score much, but he does see time on the power play and provide assists at a decent clip. He hasn’t scored in two games but has recorded points in three of his last five. Phaneuf won’t carry your team, but he could prove to be a great supplementary piece.
