Spectre Earns Golden Globe Nomination
By Alex Brannan
The new James Bond film, Spectre, earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song.
The nominations for the 2016 Golden Globe awards were announced today. Among those films represented for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association honor was Spectre, the latest James Bond film.
Spectre earned one Golden Globe nomination in the category of Best Original Song. The song in question, sung by Sam Smith with lyrics by James Napier, is “Writing’s on the Wall.”
The song became the first James Bond theme song to ever reach number one on the Billboard charts in the United Kingdom. The previous theme song, Adele’s “Skyfall,” came close, reaching number two.
“Writing’s on the Wall” faces competition from the likes of Fifty Shades of Grey, Furious 7, Love & Mercy, and Youth.

The likelihood of Spectre taking the win in the category seems slim. “See You Again” from Furious 7 was a huge success and commemorates the passing of the film’s star Paul Walker.
As bad as the movie is, the nominated song from Fifty Shades of Grey, “Love Me Like You Do,” is also a pop hit. Of course, I couldn’t imagine anything attributed to the Fifty Shades franchise winning a major motion picture award.
The real competition for Spectre comes from Love & Mercy and Youth. Both films have music running through their veins. More importantly, both films were nominated in categories other than Best Original Song, which generally means that the HFPA holds the films in a higher class.
In Youth, we have the song “Simple Song #3.” It is an operatic orchestral arrangement featuring the dynamic voice of Sumi Jo and a bouncy string backdrop. It is a vibrant song, and, if the award were to go to the most musically proficient piece alone, “Simple Song #3” would take it.
In Love & Mercy, there is the song “One Kind of Love.” The film is a biopic of Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson, and the nominated song is performed by him. Given the legacy of Wilson, this song seems like a shoo-in to win the award.
Still, if it were up to me, I think “Simple Song #3” would take the award.

P.S. In researching the Golden Globes, I initially thought Youth was nominated for the song “Just (After Song of Songs).” It is a stark, choral arrangement featuring plucked strings and a harmonized vocal melody. It is a song that is elegant in its simplicity. It’s worth a listen!
