Sitting Dalton would be a favor to Alabama fans

One of the most amazing statistics in the NFL, is that an Alabama quarterback hasn’t started, and won, an NFL game since 1988. While former Crimson Tide quarterback Jeff Rutledge’s friends and family might want this streak to continue, I’d bet the rest of Alabama’s fan base would like the streak to end mercifully.

In case you’re wondering why this is relevant for the Bengals, you need to recall that if Dalton sits on the bench, it means that AJ McCarron will likely get the start. The former Alabama quarterback would enter next week’s game against the 49ers with the full emotional might of Alabama behind him. It might even spike ticket sales for the Bengals. Could we really count out Nick Saban sending an email to the Crimson Tide fan base encouraging them to ascend upon Cincinnati to help turn this streak around? It would cause more Alabama citizens to show up in Ohio than a NASCAR race.

McCarron isn’t a bad quarterback either. He didn’t exactly light the Steelers up on Sunday, but he was far from overwhelmed. He would have a real shot to lead the team to a victory over San Francisco. Just think what this could do for Nick Saban’s recruiting. He would actually have a chance to recruit blue chip quarterbacks in addition to the All-American players he secures in every other position.

If McCarron can’t break the streak then it may continue on for another decade. It would become the most useless statistic used in SEC arguments all throughout the southeast. On behalf of everyone, AJ, please destroy this absurd anomaly and get a win.
