Util- Sean Rodriguez
Call him Diet Ben Zobrist. The way baseball is going, you need to have versatile players on your bench. Teams are carrying 12 and sometimes 13 pitchers. You need guys who can play all over the place, not only to give your guys some rest, but also if you need to pinch-hit or double switch.
Now that Zobrist signed, Rodriguez may be the best Swiss-Army Knife kind of player available on the open market.
The 30 year old only hit .246 with four homers and 17 RBI in 139 games. He did however play every infield position and the corner outfield spots last season. That can be a valuable piece to the puzzle when you are building a team.
It’s a reason why four teams are vying for his services right now. One of those is the Tigers, which makes sense when you have two batter who can only play first base when they are in the field in Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. You need that option in case something happens.
Rodriguez has only driven in over 40 runs twice, and only had over double digits in homers once. He does hit better against lefties than righties, but not to a point where it’s a big split.
Rodriguez is a flexible player and teams looking for solid bench options are going to look his way.
