Arizona Cardinals: Carson Wentz, QB – North Dakota State

It might seem a little silly to quibble with the 30th pick in the Draft, but this just seems like a huge reach to me. I understand why the Cardinals will be shopping for a Carson Palmer successor but this isn’t the right guy or the right spot in the draft to address that need.

Instead, the Cardinals should be going all-in while Palmer is still manning the QB spot for them. That means they should target an instant-impact guy at this spot in the draft. I’m not saying they need to go select a big-name offensive skill player, but it has to be a guy who’s going to be on the field for the team early and often. Any number of positions would be fine, as long as the player is someone who could help the Cardinals push for a Super Bowl berth in what will likely be one of Palmer’s last seasons.

For the record, I like Wentz as a developmental prospect. I think he could become a good NFL quarterback if he finds the right system and is given some time. If the Cardinals wanted to take him at the end of Round 2 that selection would be much more favorable. Instead, they reach into Round 1 and end up on my five worst picks list.
