5 worst picks in Todd McShay’s mock draft 1.0
Washington Redskins: Michael Thomas, WR – Ohio State
Call me crazy, but if you’re going to spend a first round pick on a wide receiver you probably should have already identified a competent quarterback who can throw him the ball. The Washington Redskins still haven’t satisfied their need for a franchise quarterback, which makes selecting a wide out in the first round a waste of time.
I actually like Michael Thomas a lot as a player. He’d even be a reasonable selection around the 16th pick in the draft where McShay has Washington choosing him. However, the Redskins are foolish to invest a valuable pick in an offensive skill player who may not get an opportunity to flourish due to poor QB play.
Instead, Washington should use their pick on a less sexy position. Perhaps a quality offensive lineman or defensive player would be in order. Really they can address any position of need whose success isn’t directly tied to Kirk Cousins, Robert Griffin III or whomever else they might trot out under center.
Michael Thomas has every chance to enjoy a productive NFL career. He should be praying that this pick doesn’t come true so he can go to a team that has a competent NFL quarterback waiting to throw him the ball.
