Dallas Cowboys 7-round mock draft
By Randy Gurzi
Round 1: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida
The defense in Dallas is hard to figure out. They make enough stops to keep their team in games. Their line is talented, and the linebackers can fly around the field. Still, they create hardly any turnovers at all and fail when they are needed most.
In the secondary, the lack of turnovers is astounding. Their cornerbacks don’t intercept or deflect passes and their safeties don’t force fumbles or find themselves in position for turnovers. In short, their defensive backfield is one of the worst in the entire NFL.
This makes Vernon Hargreaves III from Florida an ideal selection early in the first round. Hargreaves has good size at 5’11” and 198 pounds but his most impressive asset is his quickness. His ability to change direction in a snap and get to top speed is impressive and his ball skills are far and away better than anything the Cowboys secondary currently features.
Teams don’t like to throw in Hargreaves direction much, but he has still managed to intercept 10 passes and deflect 27 more in his three-year stint as a Gator.
Dallas seems content to use 2015 first round pick, Byron Jones as a free safety moving forward. This would make getting a potential shut down corner even more of a necessity, given that Jones seems to be their only young player with any true upside.
Fans would most likely be ecstatic to see the Cowboys spend back-to-back first-round picks trying to fix the atrocious secondary which has plagued them for years.
