José Calderón – PG, New York Knickerbockers

José Calderón has enjoyed a decent season for the surprisingly competent New York Knicks. With 12 wins through 26 games, the Knicks have almost reached their win total in 2014-15, when they were only able to notch 17.

Calderón has been highly efficient within the Triangle Offense, shooting 46.2% from the field and 39% from three point range. He continues to be one of the team’s best facilitators, and gives the Knicks much needed range on the perimeter.

He has also been a sieve on defense, failing to be aggressive on the ball and attentive off the ball. While he is on the court, the Knicks are scoring 103.7 points per 100 possessions and giving up 109.4. With Calderón off the court, both numbers dip to 102.7 on offense and 98.8 on defense.

Calderón is set up as the Knicks’ starter, and in the lineup he has done more to hurt the team than help them. The one problem with this for the Knicks is that they have few legitimate starting options at that spot; Jerian Grant is unproven, and Langston Galloway looks like a effective low-ceiling role player.

At this point in his career, Calderón may be better suited coming off of the bench as a sixth man for a contender rather than as a starter for a rebuilding franchise.

José Calderón’s new home: Memphis Grizzlies

The cracks are beginning to show for the Grizzlies, and the team is in desperate need of quality outside shooting. The Grizz have the personnel to hide Calderón on defense, and he would be able to reunite with his Spanish National teammate Marc Gasol.
