Round 3. Chris Jones, DE/DT, Mississippi State

Chris Jones is a large man. At 6’6″ and just over 300 pounds he has the size to be the prototypical 3-4 defensive end that can also slide inside to defensive tackle on four-man fronts.

The defensive lineman is a bit of a project according to scouts, but he has shown some great improvement at the snap, which has led to him becoming a solid defender against the run.

Indianapolis’ defensive line has resembled a turnstile in recent years, so taking a chance on a project player in round three can’t do any harm. Jones is incredibly strong but there are questions about his motor. If the Colts can find a defensive coordinator (again assuming pink slips are flying around in the offseason) that can light a fire under the 300-pounder, they could find one of the steals of the draft with this selection here.

For Jones his stats, which are 89 tackles with 17.5 going for a loss and 8.5 sacks, won’t jump out at you, but a player who does the dirty work like him is essential in a 3-4 front.
