Dallas Mavericks

Mark Cuban’s Dallas Mavericks needed to land a top free agent in the worst way this offseason. A deal was thought to be made with center DeAndre Jordan, except for the fact that the then free man had second thoughts, going back to his original team. With Jordan back with the Los Angeles Clippers, the Mavericks were left at the altar once again.

Getting a top free agent has not been an easy feat for the Mavericks. Even after they defeated a LeBron James and Dwyane Wade led Miami Heat team in the 2011 NBA Finals, the top free agents avoided signing with Dallas. No one is sure why that is the case.

Failing to land the cream of the crop has not stopped Dallas in remaining in playoff contention, but it is time to finally land one big fish.

Dirk Nowitzki is in the twilight of his playing days. Deron Williams is having a better year than last season, but he is on the wrong side of 30. Only Dwight Powell and Justin Anderson are the young players on the team with the potential to become solid pros. This team has to pass the baton at some point, but to whom?

Dallas may have to find a way to trade for some upside. They are in the bad position of not being good enough to compete for a title, while not being bad enough to bottom out and wind up in the draft lottery. Besides, the aforementioned Justin Anderson is the first first-round draft pick that the Mavericks have kept in a long time.
