Round 7- WR Nelson Spruce, Colorado

Outside of Marshall and Eric Decker, the Jets don’t have much quality depth at wide receiver. Decker continues to thrive in his slot role on the Jets and Marshall has tied and even broken several NFL/team records this season. Devin Smith had a ton of hope but had issues getting use to life in the NFL as a rookie. He was also dealing with injuries in addition to a torn ACL that ended his season. Others like Quincy Enunwa and Kenbrell Thompkins are good but not at the level that the Jets need to have a true top-notch wide receiving corps.

If the Jets had another top receiver to go along with them, the possibilities are endless on offense which is why they need to add another young talent to the positional group to really push the envelope. That’s why in the final round of the draft, they’ll take a chance on wide receiver Nelson Spruce out of Colorado due to the excitement and big play-making abilities he’ll bring to the team the moment he arrives.

At 6’1 and 195 pounds, Spruce put up quite the college football career at Colorado. Overall, he totaled 3,347 receiving yards on 294 receptions and 23 touchdowns. He has great speed and knows how to make clutch plays out of nowhere once the football is thrown in his direction. Once he gets the football in his hands, great things tend to happen as he’s known to go the extra mile and put his team in a good position to win football games.

One reason he’ll end up towards the late rounds of the draft and especially in the 7th Round of this one, is the fact that he needs to polish up his route-running and work on getting better separation from opposing defenders. Once he goes up against some of the premier cornerbacks and safeties of the NFL, he might have great difficulty in making the transition from the college scene into the pros an easy one. He will need much work to hone his craft to the next level. Once he gets there though, the sky is the limit for the damage he could cause on offense with the Jets.
