30 worst NFL Playoff teams of all time
30. 1983 Denver Broncos (9-7)
Now that his career is long over, there’s no getting around the fact that John Elway established himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the NFL during his long run with the Denver Broncos. However, in his rookie season in 1983, neither he nor the Broncos were very good at all, but they still made it into the postseason that season somehow.
Elway started 10 games that season with Steve DeBerg and Gary Kubiak also grabbing starts throughout the season. However, Elway was the most prominent starter and he was far from being quality in that role. He completed an abysmal 47.5 percent of his passes, averaged only 151.2 yards per game, and threw 14 interceptions to only seven touchdowns. Coupled with lead running back Sammy Winder averaging only 3.9 yards per carry on the season and it’s not hard to see why the 1983 Broncos had one of the worst offenses in the league that season.
The defense in Denver was slightly above average, which was the driving force behind their 9-7 record. Of their nine wins on the season, only two of them came when they allowed more than 20 points to their opponents. That speaks volume to how limited the offense was this season. Subsequently, their first round loss to the Seattle Seahawks to the tune of 31-7 was always written in the stars for this football team.
