25. 1998 Arizona Cardinals (9-7)

In the midst of a long-run of losing seasons for the Arizona Cardinals throughout the 1990s and into the early-to-mid 2000s, the 1998 Arizona Cardinals came out of nowhere to win nine games and make it into the playoffs. Considering all of the evidence in the previous seasons, the following seasons, and just in that season itself, they were a pretty terrible playoff team in the relative sense.

The Cardinals were a .500 team for the majority of the 1998 regular season, but reeled off three consecutive wins to end the year and vault them into the postseason. However, that doesn’t lessen just how mediocre this team was. Jake Plummer at quarterback is the definition of being mediocre and he started all 16 regular season games for this Cards team. Moreover, running back Adrian Murrell was average in his own right, gaining only 3.8 yards per carry. Moreover, their defense was just atrocious as they just couldn’t stop anyone.

Miraculously, this team won their first round matchup in the postseason over a Cowboys team on the end of their legs from their prominence in the 90s. However, they showed their true colors—especially on defense—in getting destroyed in their next playoff game by the Minnesota Vikings, 41-21.
